Be a Friend, Work Side by Side With a Grower: Left Foot Organics is a nonprofit organization providing employment and basic job skills training for people with developmental disabilities on a certified organic farm. Volunteers may work one-on-one with an individual to accomplish assigned field work tasks on the farm or have the opportunity to work as a crew member doing a variety of farm tasks - from picking cabbage to collecting eggs from our hens. May include providing transportation to and from the farm. Interest in gardening/vegetable production. Interest in organic/sustainable agriculture, community access, and helping people with developmental disabilities to achieve their objectives and be successful in a vocational setting. Grounds Work and Gardening at Wolf Haven: Help us keep our 80 acre wolf sanctuary and prairie habitat beautiful and inviting. Activities include gardening, cleanup, and other outside chores. Some light construction projects may be available. Opportunities to learn about animal conservation. Also help with special events during the summer. Contact: Cindy Irwin (360) 264-4695 ext 222.
Staff the Reception Desk at the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge:Volunteers who staff the reception desk sign up for a 3-4 hour shift either in the morning or afternoon. Duties include: answering Refuge phone calls, greeting office building visitors, distributing mail, participate in set-up activities for special events and meetings, and assist staff with projects. The Refuge asks a commitment of 8 hours a month for at least a year from its volunteers. Volunteers receive a free membership in the Friends of Nisqually (includes a discount in the Nature Shop and subscription to the Refuge newsletter, The Flyway) and are invited to numerous special events throughout the year including a volunteer recognition dinner and a holiday party. Training for this position is mostly on-the-job, but you will be given background training on the USFWS, history of the Refuge, and basic understanding of how the volunteer program works. Garden Mentor for GRUB:If you are an experienced gardener who would like to share your passion for gardening with beginning gardeners in the community, we are looking for Garden Mentors to work with Kitchen Garden Project Gardeners who have little or no prior experience planning and taking care of a garden. The position requires home visits, start delivery and phone check-ins with 1 to 3 gardeners ideally in your neighborhood. It begins with an orientation here at GRuB on March 8th, 2010 at 6pm and continues through October. Help folks succeed in growing good food while building community! HICOF Community Volunteer needed to Help Reach Environmental Goals: We are looking for community volunteers who would like to help with the operation of our Henderson Inlet Community Shellfish Farm. Volunteer Trail Guide for Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail:The Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail is a 2 1/2 mile interpretive trail that is centered around a wild chum salmon run on Kennedy Creek and its tributary Fiscus Creek. Each year nearly 5000 people visit the trail during the month of November to view the chum spawning behavior in this natural setting. Volunteer trail guides receive training on the life cycle and mating habits of these salmon, and are then able to lead school or community groups who visit the trail. Join the Mima Mounds NAP Work Party:Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve supports a mysterious mounded landscape well known to people that live around Olympia. Many people don't know that it also protects one of the rarest prairie ecosystems in Washington, with plants, butterflies and birds that depend on it. Our work parties are critically important to maintaining this beautiful prairie landscape. The work is not difficult and is easy to learn (you will get tired by the end of the day!) Natural Area Site Steward Needed:Site Stewards help monitor and care for Natural Areas across the state of Washington. Stewards may help map and control weeds, talk to visitors, check fences, walk trails and note conditions, and note any issues or concerns with the site. In Thurston County, stewards are needed at Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve and Woodard Bay Natural Resources Conservation Area. Contact: Birdie Davenport, Program Specialist, (360) 596-5144.
Recycling and Composing Volunteers Needed at the City of Olympia, Waste ReSources: Thisis a great hands on opportunity to help the public participate in recycling and composting while helping the Olympia Farmers Market and the City of Olympia reduce waste. Volunteers will help with an exciting public place recycling campaign presented by the City of Olympia and the Market. You will be ask to be present at one of two waste centers at the Farmers Market helping direct the public where recycling, organics and garbage should go. You do not need to handle or lift any material just be present to direct, encourage and support the public in correctly using the waste center.
